Hammond: Supporting Actress Oscar Hopefuls Might Want Lack Of Help
Could one movie dominate this year's best supporting actress Oscar selection? Certainly a disagreement might be designed for a variety of stars within the ensemble hit, The Assistance and actually a couple of them were nominated for Experts Choice Movie Honours today. But it is more probably Oscar voters may wish to spread the wealth instead of repeat the things they did for 1963s Tom Johnson, when three ladies won the lions share of nominations within the category. Your competition among supporting thesps is simply too strong this season to use that direction. Here's phone way this highly competitive category is shaping up. Management: OCTAVIA SPENCER, The Assistance As Minny Jackson, a civil privileges-era maid, Spencer designed a very memorable cake and also got the majority of the laughs among a sizable ensemble. She's a sure factor nominee, not just on her comic ability but her dramatic moments too, making her a formidable contender and crowd favorite. BRNICE BEJO, THE ARTIST Dealing with the task not just of playing charge female role inside a black and whitened quiet film, Bejo also needed to learn how to tap dance and sing additionally to as being a credible budding celebrity from the big screen. Quite simply she will it all except talk. Nevertheless its ample. SHAILENE WOODLEY, THE DESCENDANTS Breaking from the cable television teen comedy ghetto, Woodley demonstrated she's the real thing, delivering a layered, complex and three-dimensional performance of the teenage girl who all of a sudden faces bigresponsibilities. Developing a credible father/daughter relationship opposite George Clooney, Woodley emerged because the someone to watch from her generation. VANESSA REDGRAVE, CORIOLANUS Being an ambitious and politically shrewd military lady and mother, the inimitable Redgrave had her finest hour on the watch's screen in a long time, specifically in one killer monologue that continues to be possibly the best bit of acting in almost any 2011 movie. A questionable Oscar champion for 1977s Julia, her performance here's sure to internet her a amazing seventh career nomination. SANDRA BULLOCK, Very Noisy And Extremely CLOSE On her first role since winning the very best actress Oscar 2 yrs ago for that Blind Side, Bullock required on the more compact but very significant role because the mother of the boy trying to find solutions after his father is wiped out on 9/11. Highly emotional and nicely underplayed, Bullock will get another shot in the brass ring and really should possess the audience in tears once more. JESSICA CHASTAIN, The Assistance or even the TREE OF Existence or TAKE SHELTER or How to start with Chastain, who it appears is at almost every other movie launched this year? She was superb in most, so runs the chance of rescheduling herself out completely. The NY Film Experts gave her their supporting actress award for any trio of films (plus they didnt even mention Your Debt), however the Academy does not have that luxury. Her best choice will most likely function as the role most broadly seen, as Celia Foote within the Help however it might be tough to separate her from several very gifted co-stars. JUDI DENCH, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN Multiple Oscar nominee Dench really won to have an eight minute role in 1998s Shakespeare for each other and her role her because the great actress Dame Sybil Thorndike isn't larger, and memorable. In the end, there's nothing beats a Dame playing a Dame. Her role as Hoovers mother in J. Edgar also gives her added exposure. MELISSA MCCARTHY, BRIDESMAIDS Broad comedy performances like McCarthys within this female raunch comedy rarely get serious Oscar recognition however the Emmy-winning star of Mike and Molly so completely and shamelessly stole each and every scene she was for the reason that there's plenty of buzz percolating, and Universals primary hope of coming into this year's race. Jesse McTEER, ALBERT NOBBS This movie should really fit in with Glenn Close but her co-star Jesse McTeer rules every scene shes in and nabbed an Indie Spirit nomination on her efforts. Unless of course you realize ahead of time shes even just in the film you will not recognize her and stars love roles in which a artist completely vanishes in to the character. CONSIDERTHE Options: JUDY GREER, THE DESCENDANTS Another small but great supporting turn out of this veteran actress who may never have really become very good she warrants. Stars know her though and they're doing the voting. Her funny, touching portrayal of the tricked wife who attempts to atone for her husbands indiscretions is memorable.A hospital room confrontation with star George Clooney is priceless. MARION COTILLARD, Night time IN PARIS This Oscar champion is really a delight underneath the direction of Woodsy Allen and everyone knows Woodsy includes a knack for landing his supporting stars Oscarnods so don't discount her chances. ANJELICA HUSTON, 50/50 Because the doting, concerned mother of the cancer victim, Huston is pitch perfect, another fine outing from an actress that has developed into our finest. She won an Oscar for 1985s Prizzis Recognition and may find herself in contention all over again if enough people play the DVD screener. CAREY MULLIGAN, SHAME After charming audiences and winning a BAFTA as well as an Oscar nomination within an Education, Mulligan changes pace, and hair color, completely to tackle this raw, naked NC-17 role and she or he nails it again even dealing with sing NY NY. Can there be anything she no longer can do? EVAN RACHEL WOOD, THE IDES OF MARCH This is actually the type of tortured role youthful stars kill for and Wood provides on all cylinders. For reasons uknown, there hasnt been a great deal of honours buzz around it but stars will recognize an overall total professional performance and she or he might be a sleeper. JODIE Promote, KATE WINSLET, CARNAGE Similar to their male alternatives, Oscar those who win Promote and Winslet may split the main difference within this screen adaptation from the Broadway farce, God of Carnage. It's a Solomons choice between your two so choose. BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD, The Assistance We began using the Help and we'll finish by using it. But Howard warrants recognition, some type of recognition for believably playing two very unlikeable ladies and causing us to be still care what goes on for them. She made probably the most of her couple of moments in 50/50 but she centered them like a spoiled southern belle within the Help. She might be overshadowed by a few her co-stars but consideration ought to be compensated.

All-American Muslim Loses Advertiser
For a show with such a dividing subject, the lives of Muslims in the U.S., TLC’s All American Muslim went surprisingly long without attracting major controversy. But a month into its run, the docu reality series has lost a major advertiser, Lowe’s, after a campaign by conservative watchdog the Florida Family Association. The show profiles only Muslims that appear to be ordinary folks while excluding many Islamic believers whose agenda poses a clear and present danger to liberties and traditional values that the majority of Americans cherish, the group said on its site. Clearly this program is attempting to manipulate Americans into ignoring the threat of jihad and to influence them to believe that being concerned about the jihad threat would somehow victimize these nice people in this show. The group posted a letter it said it had received from Lowe’s confirming the pullout, something the hardware store giant later acknowledged on Twitter but claimed the decision was not made under pressure from the Florida Family Assoc. We did not pull our ads based solely on the complaints or emails of any one group,” the company said. “It is never our intent to alienate anyone. Lowes values diversity of thought in everyone, including our employees and prospective customers. Florida Family Assoc.’s campaign is reminiscent of that the Parents TV Council waged against MTV’s racy drama Skins earlier this year. But, while the PTC had mostly free reign in its attacks on the show as the charges were for child pornography, the Florida Family Assoc. is expected to get pushback from Muslim and human rights groups. The first to voice its opposition was the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. Sadly corporations, such as Lowes, have succumbed to the idiocracy of such garbage campaigns, which are orchestrated by groups and organizations which lack credibility, legitimacy, and are founded on the basic notions of bigotry and racism reminiscent of a shameful era in this countrys history, the organization said in a statement. It is unclear whether Lowe’s move will be followed by other blue-chip companies. (the Florida Family Assoc. claims that Home Depot and Sweetn Low have pulled their ads from the show too.) But in a statement, TLC says that we stand behind All American Muslim and were happy the show has strong advertising support. All-American Muslim is already at the center of another type of controversy. A production company filed a lawsuit earlier this month claiming that TLC stole its idea for the show.

Survivor's Keith Addresses Gossips About Dating Whitney Jim on Laying About His Profession
Keith Tollefson, Jim Grain Yesteryear two instances of Survivor: South Off-shore have really tossed us for any loop. Would be the producers finally bored from the repetition after 23 seasons? 1 week nobody goes home, the following week, two get bumped out at the same time. That unfortunate duo been Keith Tollefson (he's the one that did not say much), and Jim Grain (he's the forensic science teacher medicinal marijuana dispenser who everybody thought was creepy). TVGuide.com got the opportunity to talk to the first kind Savaii tribe people about how exactly it feels to become around the jury, the things they skipped most around the island, and who they intend to provide the $a million prize to. Bonus: Keith (kind of) addresses gossips that he's dating Whitney! What made it happen seem like the very first time you had been relaxing in the jury, facing your former tribe people using the understanding that you simply were no more in the overall game?Keith: It had been among the most difficult feelings that I have ever needed to cope with during my existence. You will find the greatest of levels when won by you and also the cheapest of lows whenever you lose. I have didn't have a lesser feeling ... as soon as whenever you put your aficionado within the fire.Jim: You are looking at the sidelines. Yeah, you'll still see the overall game but you just have an effect, however the shower and everything felt so excellent after however when I returned in and that i saw how dirty everybody was, I simply thought about being dirty again and resting on bamboo. It's painful.Social TV: How Survivor's Shaun Probst Bridged the space Between CBS and it is AudienceWho can you provide the million to now?Rick: You want to see our Savaii prosper. Apart from that, it's difficult to express. Jim: Just how much the paranoia, the possible lack of food, and the possible lack of sleep reaches you.Keith: It had been hard meaning that standing on a tribe having a coming back player, we'd function as the secondary cast in comparison to him. But Keith, you did not appear to possess much air time. Had you been disappointed whenever you viewed the episodes?Keith: I had been very surprised. I certainly seem like I acquired some a shaft on editing. But it is understandable. You've some pretty strong gamers. Jim is really a noisy mouth and he's clearly likely to take my air time.
Lake Bell Test Drives the Fiat 500
This informative article first came out inside the November. 25 problem in the Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsLos Angeles Auto Show Preview: Ford, Fiat, BMW, MitsubishiLake Bell Test Drives the 2012 Bentley Continental GTLake Bell Test Drives the Cadillac Carpal tunnel-V CoupeLake Bell Test Drives the Jaguar XKR Coupe Once I was 15 years of age, I were living in Europe fora year. My proudest accomplishment was discovering how you can say "Mi piace la pizza disadvantage funghi," meaning, "I really like pizza with mushrooms" in Italian. This didn't bode well for my parents' plans personally, considering I used to be dwelling in France to know French. But alas, I used to be an Italophile, which interest folded over into my type of cars. I ended up coming my film taking snapshots of "classy" cars I imagined having once i was elevated to become fancy adult. Most my photos were of -- employ heavy Italian accent here -- the FiatCinquecento. Why? Because it's so damn cute! It's scientifically proven that whenever you lay how well you see around the 1969 Fiat Cinquecento, you need to emit somewhat breathy giggle. So test-driving the 2012 Fiat 500 was an automotive coming-of-age moment. Would it not satiate my nostalgia? And provides an update for the classic shape, the Fiat 500's design is yet another perfect homage for the past. But because the 500 is cute just like a button -- and getting greater than 30 mpg, it's a perfect fit for your fuel-consumption-conscious customer -- the pickup is modest at best. You're not necessarily cutting people offered by single.4-liter, four-cylinder engine. However, in the vehicle that resembles a shiny dumpling, you won't have plenty of street cred to begin with. With only 101 horsepower, you shouldn't be buying this vehicle for your energy. Ultimately, the Fiat 500 might be the fundamental city vehicle, coming from inside the 19 fifties just like a cheap postwar treatment for urban transport. You'll be able to park anywhere. Literally. Normally I personally don't like carting within the Hollywood Slopes in anything bigger than my Small because the streets are very mangled and tight -- it's like Europe however with no romance. Nevertheless the Fiat takes all the angst in the process. Large, body body fat Sports utility automobiles and Mercedes sedans clumsily make an effort to navigate the veins in the canyons, because the Fiat showcases its remarkably forgiving suspension, tucking into corners with aplomb. No matter the Fiat's minuscule size, its interior is spacious, although slightly much like a minivan. Its user-friendly ergonomics certainly are a plus, as well as the liberal utilization of hard plastics is excused with the 500's optional two-tone leather seats together with a Bose stereo system system system that turns this small container machine in to a four-wheeled boom box. James McAvoy, 'Arthur Christmas' Star, on Voice Acting and Improving
By Caroline Frost "I needed Arthur to become really appealing without having to be cute, with soft hair that will make you need to pat him," is when 'Arthur Christmas' director Sarah Cruz imagined her lead character. Is the fact that James McAvoy? It's now. "I figured I had been who audition, however it switched out, I really already had the gig, that was an added bonus,Inch is when the softly-spoken Scottish actor takes note of it. McAvoy is among the UK's most in-demand youthful stars, after diving right into a fantasy world because the wide-eyed Mr. Tumnus in 'The Stories of Narnia,' opposite Julia Roberts in 'Wanted,' engaging using the science of 'X Males: First Class' and brooding war time drama in 'Atonement,' under his belt. In 'Arthur Christmas' voices the title role of Arthur, the more youthful boy from the Father Christmas empire, within the animated Christmas fairytale. Arthur's family are billed using the duty of delivering presents to any or all the kids on the planet, with the help of twenty-first century technology along with a million industrious elves. McAvoy, who also offers animation experience from 'Gnomeo and Juliet,' stated the exercise of voicing a job still throws him. "It is extremely strange," he stated working in london. "You are a fundamental element of they as well as your voice produces what is happening, but you are not really there 99% of times, and when you're, there's nobody else within the room, which means you feel isolated. It is a strange, disjointed process." Nevertheless, it certainly has some benefits. "It is extremely clearing, you may be someone else entirely, not only within the normal method of acting, however when your physicality does not matter, it's nearly what your voice can perform. Used to do lots of radio initially when i first began out, and it is not too different." Plus, for McAvoy, it meant the opportunity to use such British stalwarts as Oscar champion Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Ashley Jensen, Hugh Laurie and the old castmate from TV's Condition of Play, Bill Nighy -- whom McAvoy calls "a remarkably awesome, awesome guy." McAvoy already has other projects within the pipeline, from London thriller 'Welcome towards the Punch' for an adaptation of Irvine Welsh's best-seller 'Filth.' After accomplishing this degree of success, does McAvoy feel different? "I believe 'The Last King of Scotland' was most likely the level,Inch he takes note of from the epic biopic that told the storyline of Idi Amin and the physician, performed by McAvoy. "People saw I possibly could be that guy who may help tell the film's story. And since Forrest won the Oscar, also it would be a critical hit, it meant plenty of company directors and studio people first viewed it, and for that reason saw me." Despite his current run of success, there's no hint that McAvoy is sitting on his laurels, actually the correct answer is overturn. "The task is the fact that everybody wants to obtain better, and we are all able to be bad," he states of his progressively much talked about. "As you become more recognition from audiences and professionals alike, you are not permitted to fail, this is the hard factor. The frightening factor could it be may become about setting it up right rather than just doing the work, seeing what goes on and being brave. "Sometimes you receive enticed to become less brave, make a move simpler. But that is not how you have where you stand, so this is the challenge. Hopefully, you've compiled enough good stuff, so when there is a bad one, they'll forgive you." J.K. Rowling Almost Killed Hagrid, Too
It has been quite the week for 'Harry Potter' fans. Monday was not only the 30th anniversary of the death of Harry's (fictional) parents, but also when author J.K. Rowling revealed that she almost killed Ron Weasley before having a change of heart. That blood-lust almost extended to Rubeus Hagrid as well. Say it ain't so, J.K.! It's so. In an interview on the Blu-ray release of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' with star Daniel Radcliffe, Rowling explains that she liked the idea of Hagrid carrying Harry at the beginning and end of the story, a bookend that kept the gentle giant "safe." Per Rowling, your favorite bearded gameskeeper was a "natural" option to be slain otherwise. Yikes! On the flip side, Rowling was going to keep Remus Lupin alive, but realized that during a great war, atrocities like new parents getting killed is often reality. As such, Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks were casualties in the Battle of Hogwarts. Hashtag: tears. [via EW] [Photo: Warner Bros.] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Mia Wasikowska on Her Busy Year in 'Jane Eyre,' 'Restless' and 'Albert Nobbs' (Audio Interview)
Focus FeaturesMia Wasikowska in "The Kids Are All Right" Over the past year, Mia Wasikowska played a key role in a film that scored a best picture Oscar nomination (The Kids Are All Right), starred in a film that made more than $1 billion at the box office (Alice in Wonderland) and was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world -- not bad for someone who only turned 22 earlier this month -- and yet virtually nobody can even pronounce her name!our editor recommends'Albert Nobbs' Trailer: Glenn Close Dons Drag to Play 19th-Century English Butler (Video)'Jane Eyre' Costume Designer Reveals Secrets Behind Mia Wasikowska's WardrobeTRAILER: 'Alice in Wonderland's' Mia Wasikowska in 'Jane Eyre' When I met up with the Australian actress last month for a chat about her life and career -- including the three films in which she stars this year, Cary Fukunaga's literary adaptation Jane Eyre (opposite Michael Fassbender) as the title character, Rodrigo Garcia's costume drama Albert Nobbs (opposite Glenn Close) as a conniving young maid and Gus Van Sant's mellow dramedy Restless (opposite Henry Hopper, the late Dennis Hopper's son) as a young girl diagnosed with terminal cancer -- I told her that I needed to know, for my peace of mind, what the proper pronunciation is. She laughed and stated for the record: "Me-yah Vash-i-kov-ska -- v's instead of w's!" PHOTOS: 28 Actresses Who Could Portray Hollywood Icon Grace Kelly That is is a name that you should learn and remember, because I think it is one that you will be hearing for the next six or seven decades. Indeed, she is one of those eerily chameleonic talents of a caliber that comes along only once or twice in a generation -- think Meryl Streep, Jodie Fosterand Kate Winslet -- and should be cherished. I know that I will never forget the first time that she came across my radar. It was in 2008, during season one of HBO's criminally underappreciated (and recently canceled) drama series In Treatment, and she was playing Sophie, one of the younger patients of psychologist Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne). Over the course of nine hourlong episodes, all of which are packed with dialogue and appear to have been captured in continuous/uninterrupted camera shots, Wasikowska makes you feel every possible emotion toward her character, who is alternately vulnerable, volatile, and sweet. It is one of the great television performances of all time, and it is absolutely inexplicable that it didn't earn her an Emmy nomination. PHOTOS: Hollywood's New Leading Ladies Anyway, the future looks bright for Wasikowska: Restless is playing still in select theaters; Albert Nobbs will open nationally Jan. 27; and, on Jan. 24, there is an outside shot that she might score a best actress Oscar nod for her critically acclaimed take on the oft-attempted title character in Jane Eyre. Then, at some point over the next few months, we'll see her playing Shia LaBeouf's girlfriend in John Hillcoat's highly anticipated bootlegging period piece The Wettest County in the World and as the daughter of fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman in Chan-woon Park's twisted-sounding Stoker. In Honor of Anonymous, 5 Reimaginings of Shakespearean Classics with Today's Auteurs
This week’s new feature Anonymous is alluring for two reasons: It explores the possibility that Shakespeare didn’t write his masterworks, and it looks unintentionally hilarious. If I could dress up for Halloween as Vanessa Redgrave’s line-reading of “None of your plays will ever carry your name,” I would. In tribute to this dubious drama, let’s explore what the Bard’s plays would sound like if they were written or retooled by current auteurs. Ready for Why Did I Get Jealous Too? Judd Apatow’s Richard III A pathetically self-deprecating, but cunning man (Russell Brand) walks with a limp and seems pretty hopeless as a lame L.A. romantic. But after a few of his detractors die, Richard catches the eye of a snappy newsmagazine correspondent (Leslie Mann), who helps assist him in his rise to prominence. As he gains recognition and takes hold over the entertainment industry, he becomes increasingly self-conscious about his decrepit state and adopts the name McLimpin’. It’s about a half hour too long. Tyler Perry’s Othello AKA Why Did I Get Jealous Too?. Tyler Perry’s version of the Venetian moor’s plight removes most of the paranoia and fear from Shakespeare’s tale and replaces them with pesky marital woes. Othello (Perry) and Dez (Taraji P. Henson) have a functional marriage, but their flippant next door neighbor Iago (Whoopi Goldberg, crossdressing and doublecrossing!) finds a way to interject mistrust into their relationship using rhyming slams, vaudevillian mockery of their weaknesses, and a “green-eyed monster” (her disruptive terrier who jumps on the furniture). Will Othello and Dez survive? Or will they smother each other with comic exasperation? Next: Tyler Perry’s Euripides’s Medea. Quentin Tarantino’s The Tempest Forget Julie Taymor: Quentin Tarantino’s version of The Tempest takes the island of weirdos and throws them in a kickass retelling of Pearl Harbor. This time, the magical Prospero uses his spells to thwart Japan’s attack, and the monster Caliban is a legendary, hairy surf champion who doesn’t mind beating up some terrorists if the timing’s right. Prospero’s daughter Miranda will not participate in her father’s tricks until she walks out of this throwback cabana with a hula trophy. Nancy Meyers’s Twelfth Night It’s a case of mistaken identity as a wealthy Los Angeles yoga instructor named Viola (Diane Keaton — in traditionally androgynous attire) decides to become an apprentice to a wealthy L.A. architect named Orsino (Steve Martin). She falls for Orsino, but he’s in love with a wealthy cartoonist named Olivia (Meryl Streep). He sends the smitten Viola over to Olivia as an emissary, but Olivia immediately falls for Viola’s winsome and gallant appeal. That hat! That vest! Those magician tails! It’s just about complicated. Darren Aronofsky’s Macbeth An unwitting protagonist descends into a dizzying, phantasmagorical vortex of power and visibility dotted with mysterious deaths and paranormal events. Actually, Macbeth should just be called Requiem for a Black Swan.

Busting Out!
An Andrew Guild, Simon Bryce, Nirenna Productions and Hayworth Theater presentation of the revue in 2 functions produced by Emma Powell, with a lot more material by Bev Killick and Bryce. Directed by Terence O'Connell. With: Emma Powell and Mandi Lodge.Subtle they ain't. Emma Powell and Mandi Lodge, the 2 blowsy, zoftig Aussie dames of "Busting Out!," seriously just like a Mack truck supported towards the Hayworth Theater having a cargo of raunch, nudity, flesh puppetry, audience participation and camping around the subjects of female breasts and girl energy. The celebration of what's going on Above would be a hit Here, but here? Just like any bachelorette party, plentiful alcohol can help. Were you to give Benny Hill a sex change and split his personality in 2, you'd get these ladies. Lodge may be the merrie trickster, naive yet having a wicked gleam in her own eye. She shakes Them using the greater vigor and flirts more freely using the gents attending (and a few of the gals too). Act two features Lodge's extended standup routine on incontinence, makeup purchasing and sex with husband, creating in good humor what she lacks in good jokes. Powell, the brains from the revue, can also be the brains from the pair and officious emcee. She's Oliver Sturdy, lengthy-battling with her partner's antics. A hostile streak busts out when, as woofing Chinese general Hung Lo, Powell goodies the crowd as her personal cadre for any class in Lactation 101. Both remove their tops early and frequently, revealing extremely pendulous accoutrements having a total insufficient self-awareness. To that particular extent "Busting Out!" is a bit of political theater, challenging males and ladies alike to conquer their discomfort, already, and embrace humans' fleshy essence. Possibly due to its touring character, the development looks rather threadbare. It clearly wasn't funded by a massive endowment in the Mellon Foundation. (Sorry just looking to get in to the spirit of the one thing.) World War Z Guns Seized In Hungary
First Published: October 11, 2011 11:58 AM EDT Credit: Getty Images BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Caption Brad Pitt films a scene from World War Z in Glasgow City centre in Glasgow, Scotland on August 18, 2011 Nearly 100 live weapons to be used in Brad Pitts World War Z film were confiscated by Hungarian authorities, local media reported Tuesday. The weapons included machine guns, rifles and pistols, security officials said. The weapons arrived from London to Budapests Ferenc Liszt Airport on Saturday and were discovered at a nearby duty free zone, Janos Hajdu, head of Hungarys Counterterrorism Center, said. He said he could not confirm they were meant for the film. Its possible that all the weapons were brought in for the film, but this would not be allowed by Hungarian law, as the weapons had not been fully deactivated and could easily be used to fire live ammunition, Hajdu said on Neo FM radio. This is a very complicated case. Hajdu said the weapons had been shipped to a Hungarian company, whose representative was being questioned by investigators. Hajdu explained that in Hungary weapons were considered to be deactivated only if the process was irreversible, while the weapons seized could still be fired even though screwshad been used to fill the end of the barrels. Adam Goodman, whose company is providing production services for World War Z, said he had been advised not to comment on links between the seized weapons and the film. We are preparing as planned. We are not changing our schedule, Goodman told The Associated Press. He added that media reports claiming the film set had been raided by police to confiscate the weapons were not true. Hungarys National Investigation Office said it had launched a probe in the case, but spokesman Laszlo Bartha said they had no additional information for now. (Copyright 2011 by Associated Press. Michael Jackson Tribute Concert Goes on Despite Problems
Three generations of Michael Jackson's family -- with a few notable absentees -- joined an eclectic roster of entertainers Saturday to pay tribute to the King of Pop, a celebration of the late star's life overshadowed by the Los Angeles manslaughter trial of his doctor.our editor recommendsMichael Jackson Tribute Concert: 5 Mishaps Leading Up to the U.K. ShowBlack Eyed Peas Pull Out of Michael Jackson Tribute ConcertChristina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green to Headline Michael Jackson Tribute ConcertJamie Foxx Hosting Michael Jackson Tribute ConcertJanet Jackson Will Not Perform at Michael Jackson Tribute ConcertMichael Jackson Tribute Concert Adds Black Eyed Peas to LineupMichael Jackson's Family Announces Tribute Concert On a stage shaped like a giant glove, participants performed songs from across Jackson's career - from his childhood with the Jackson 5 through monster solo albums like "Thriller" and "Bad." Participants urged fans to ignore the criticism and planning glitches that marked preparations for the show in Wales, and to revel in the celebration of Jackson's musical legacy. PHOTOS: MTV: 30 Years of Music Videos "It's not about the controversy," said R&B star Ne-Yo, who kicked off the show with a rendition of "Billie Jean," complete with some passable moonwalking. "It's not about the trial. It's not about his death. It's about celebrating his life. It's about celebrating his music." The crowd at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium did just that, roaring with approval as Jackson's brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie -- three-fifths of the original Jackson 5 -- took the stage to perform "Blame It On the Boogie" with British boyband JLS. "Can you feel his spirit in the house tonight?" asked Marlon. Judging by the cheers, the fedora hats and the sequined gloves in the audience, many could. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths The lineup for the "Michael Forever" show included Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Cee Lo Green -- and, via video, Beyoncé. The concert has divided the King of Pop's family and followers. The three brothers and sister La Toya were performing, while Michael Jackson's mother Katherine was in the audience and his children Prince, 14, Paris, 13, and 9-year-old Michael Joseph Jr., known as Blanket, briefly took the stage to thank fans for coming. "We're very happy to be here on this special night to honor our father," said Paris, who like her older brother smiled and appeared confident, while Blanket stood stoic and shy. While 13 Jackson family members attended -- including vocal group 3T, composed of Tito's three sons -- Michael's brothers Jermaine and Randy and sister Janet have stayed away, saying it is wrong to hold the show at the same time as the manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray. Before the show, Marlon Jackson said he respected his siblings' decision. "Each one of us grieves differently," he said. "We want to celebrate the positive side of his life, the positive things that he did." Jackson died in June 2009, at age 50, as he was preparing for a string of comeback concerts in London. His last hours are being relived in graphic detail at the trial of Murray, accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the bedroom of his rented mansion on June 25, 2009. Some fans have said it's inappropriate to hold the tribute show during the trial, but those who came to Cardiff said it was a fitting antidote to the grim courtroom spectacle. "There's a lot of negativity in that courtroom," said Ronnie Lee, a 32-year-old truck driver from Pembroke, Wales, sporting a "Thriller" T-shirt. "This is a chance to say, 'Thank you Michael' and celebrate the music." Fans across Europe gathered outside the stadium, where vendors did a brisk trade in King of Pop T-shirts and hats like those once worn by Jackson. "Whatever happens in that court, we'll never get Michael back," said Karin Kiewiet, 40, a local government worker from Emmen, Netherlands. "This is a good opportunity for us to begin grieving." The show has suffered teething problems, with producers struggling to line up top-name acts for the tribute, hosted by actor Jamie Foxx and British TV host Fearne Cotton. The Black Eyed Peas pulled out of the lineup this week, citing "unavoidable circumstances" amid reports the chart-topping band is splitting up. Organizer Chris Hunt said that despite the last-minute loss, fans could expect "a very, very spectacular show." "Everything we've done has been governed by one criterion -- would Michael have done it this way, would he approve, would he like it?" said Hunt, chief executive of Global Live Events. "We're trying to do something worthy of one of the greatest showmen of modern times." Several fan groups around the world have criticized the event, not just for its timing, but for ticket prices that started at about $100 and for what some regard as an out-of-the-way location in Cardiff, 150 miles (240 kilometers) west of London. Organizers also outraged many fans by inviting the rock band Kiss, whose bassist Gene Simmons told a magazine last year that there was "no doubt in my mind" that Jackson, who was acquitted of molestation charges in 2005, had abused children. The invitation was hastily rescinded, but many fans remained angry. "The fans are not happy that the Jackson estate is not involved," said Wesley Noorhoff, president of a Dutch Michael Jackson fan club. "It seemed like they wanted to build a concert soon, to get money. I believe it should wait, not only because of the Murray trial. If you do a tribute to Michael, it has to be the best there is, just like Michael." Hunt insisted the show would be a success. He said more than 40,000 tickets had been sold by Friday, and he was confident of reaching the venue's 50,000 capacity. Some of the proceeds will go to the AIDS Project Los Angeles and Prince's Trust charities, and a portion will be placed in a trust fund for Jackson's children, though organizers did not give an exact breakdown. Marlon Jackson, 54, said he wanted dissenters to know that Michael would have approved of the show. "I want the world to understand that my brother was more than just an entertainer," he said. "There was a human side to him as well." Related Topics International Michael Jackson

Hugh Jackman talks The Wolverine director James Mangold
Doing press for Real Steel - which opens tomorrow in the US and next week in the UK - Hugh Jackman has obviously had to field a few questions about his other projects, especially The Wolverine.Having talked up the script previously, he's now backing new director James Mangold's vision for the project."The director is going to bring their own voice to it. Jim has done some great movies. Many, many different movies like 3:10 To Yuma," Jackman told Moviefone.Excitingly, it's another Western that comes to Jackman's mind when he thinks about The Wolverine."We had an image of this movie like The Outlaw Josey Wales, which I love. And he has a really great take on it. Yes, it's going to be different than Darren [Aronofsky]'s version, but I think it's going to be just as great from what I've seen. And he's doing his tweaks to what is already a very strong script."As for Real Steel, did director Shawn Levy put his stamp on that project? After all, the original short story conjures up a much more bleak future."[Shawn] was very clear from the beginning that we needed to establish what the rules are. In the original script there were robotic dogs in that junkyard scene. So as they're trying to get out, there's a whole action sequence. And Shawn said, 'This is just confusing. You've got robotic dogs, but we're still driving an old truck? We're not having flying cars, this is not Blade Runner.'"

Chuck Lorre Hints At Writing Tell-All Book
Is Chuck Lorre dying to tell his side of the Charlie Sheen saga? The TV exec producer’svanity card at the end of tonight’s Two And A Half Men episode could be a clue. His remarks areespecially interesting because ofthe new legalsettlement among Lorre,Sheen, and Warner Bros: CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #351 Sometime last year I realized I had become the unwilling contestant in a reality show. I didn’t understand the rules, wasn’t sure if there even were any, and pretty much hated every second of it. For many months I kept hoping and praying that it would end. But it did not. Somewhere along the way, something inside me died. Anyway, now, suddenly, I’m being told that the reality show’s been cancelled. Apparently, it was just one of those things that somehow got out of control. Sorry. Whoops. Live and learn. Moving on. Game over. And that’s fine. I am so good with that. Yes, please, let’s all move on. There’s just one problem. That thing inside me that died? It walks at night. It’s angry. It’s hungry. And worst of all…it’s writing a tell-all book.Watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2010

Toronto: Lionsgate Acquires Hot Title Buddies With Kids
Exclusive: Deadline’s Mike Fleming virtually known as it last Tuesday, then postponed confirmationafter retailers indicated their auction wasn’t a done deal, but Buddies With Kids, the Toronto Fest premiereromantic comedy co-starring Jennifer Westfeldtwhich shedirected, authored and co-created with longtime b.f. Jon Hamm (who also offers a supporting role) has indeedofficially offered to Lionsgate, just like Fleming initially reported, based on Westfeldt whobroke this news in my experience at thelate nightAMC Emmy celebration party that they herself learned midway through Sunday evening’s Emmy ceremony. “The purchase just closed as the Emmys were happening. We’re thrilled,” she stated whilst lamenting Hamm’s 4th consecutive loss as well as Actor inside a Drama Series ( Mad Males did win an unparalleled 4th Emmy for Drama Series). The purchase certainly makes Hamm’s Emmy loss simpler to consider as Buddies With Kids was among the most popular game titles in Toronto to be available. Westfeldt isn’t sure but needs a probable spring release for that well-examined comedy which consists of an outbreak performance from Adam Scott within the leading male role and co-stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph , Edward Burns and Megan Fox additionally to Hamm. Millennium and CBS Films were among other suitors for that title so that as late as Saturday evening I heard Millennium might have been offering a greater figure, but before the film opened Lionsgate had its eye around the movie. Westfeldt explained it almost didn’t make its Toronto date because of last second lab problems but ultimately everything exercised.

Empire's New Sherlock Cover Is Here
And Moriarty talks A Game Of ShadowsIf you're looking out your window onto a rainy day, remember that it could be worse. If this were the 19th century, that'd be a thick pea-souper that'd give you respiratory problems soon as look at you - but on the upside, you might also get to hang out with Victorian sleuth Sherlock Holmes, as brought to life by Robert Downey Jr in Guy Ritchie's upcoming sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and on the cover of the new Empire magazine. {Empire Sherlock Holmes 2 Cover}This time, Sherlock himself is a bit more pulled together - he's got some snazzy new duds, for instance - and the crew are determined not to rest on their laurels (or sacks of cash) from last time. Says Downey, Last time we were, I think, treated very kindly, considering that the movie had enough really good, bright, sweet parts and it kinda held up. However, it wasn't exactly the most innovative or clever act three of any movie. But we're all confident that, this time, for the bones of the story, we couldn't work it out any better than we have. We also chatted to Jared Harris about playing arch villain Professor Moriarty. He's the ringmaster. He casts his shadow over the whole film, he's the motivator of the plot. I'm sure you've noticed that people who don't really give a fuck what anybody else thinks, and don't care what the consequences of their actions are are long as they're okay, and don't believe in any kind of divine retribution, they have a licence to do absolutely anything they want. And people who operate within a moral compass, like Sherlock Holmes, their hands are tied. So I'd say Moriarty is very dangerous. Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows is out on December 16 as a sort of early Christmas present. The new Empire is out on Thursday, as a very early Christmas present. Check out the full issue preview now.
New Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark Clips
And behind-the-scenes photosAs the release date for Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark inches ever closer to its October 7 debut (unless you happen to see it at FrightFest this weekend), a plethora of new pictures and several new clips have hit the interwebs. The new pics come from the 19th century opening to the film, wherein we get a few clues why this particular des. res. has been lying empty for the last hundred years or so. We don't want to say too much, but let's say it's not all cheery waltzes and long lives of wearing doilies on their head for Blackwood (Garry McDonald) and his housekeeper (Edwina Ritchard). {Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark BTS}As for the clips, beware mild spoilers (more in the one called The Garage than the others) but they will give you a taste for the creepiness awaiting. ABC Nabs Shawn Ryan/Karl Gajdusek Drama With Pilot Production Commitment
EXCLUSIVE: In the latest quick and big sale this development season, a drama from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan and feature writer Karl Gajdusek just landed at ABC with a hefty pilot production commitment. The project, titled The Last Resort, was pitched to the networks on Friday with the deal at ABC closing in principal last night, though final points are still being ironed out. Sony Pictures TV, where Ryan is based with an overall deal, is producing. The Last Resort is described as a big swing and massive in scope. It is a thriller set in the near future when the country is very fractured and revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who become hunted after ignoring an order to shoot nuclear missiles. They escape to a NATO listening outpost where they publicly declare themselves to be the world's smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads. The show will explore the society the fugitives create, the natives they meet and how what they've done affects the group and its unity. "It also allows us to examine what is going on in this country in micro form," Ryan said. The project came together when Marney Hockman, Ryan's executive at his MiddKid Prods company, brought in Gajdusek, whom she had been pursuing for a couple of years. Ryan and Gajdusek then came up with the idea for The Last Resort and decided to write it together. This is the second project from Ryan, repped by WME and the Shuman Co, to land a major deal this development season, his first at Sony TV. His collaboration with Criminal Minds creator Simon Mirren, a crime procedural, was recently bought by CBS with a put pilot commitment. Gajdusek, repped by Verve and Management 360, is an in-demand feature writer. Emmys 2011: Can Anybody Break 'The Daily Show's' Emmy Streak?
Jon Stewart themself may be feeling just a little greedy at this time. Never within the good reputation for the range, music and comedy series category, established in 1951, has one show had this type of monster run. The Daily Show has 14 wins, eight of these consecutive series trophies. However with Jay and Dork snubbed and Fallon and Conan within the mix, a ocean change could finally be coming for any awesome category affected by of a routine.Related Subjects•Emmys The Colbert Report Comedy Central Why It Might Win: Associated with a series on network or cable -- variety, comedy drama, reality -- nothing makes me laugh just like a fool a lot more than The Colbert Report. Between faux-blowhard Stephen Colbert's incredible aptitude for newsworthy absurdism and thus-strange-they're-wonderful moments, like his musical journey to Nashville to hold with Jack Whitened, he'sthe most entertaining personality about the tube. It's impossible this series hasn't won (although it's obtained two Emmys for writing) because, frankly, Colbert is really a helluva much more fun compared to Daily Show. Why It Might Lose: Because he has frequently joked about the air, Colbert's worst enemy is Stewart, with whom he shares not just a network but additionally a publish-primetime slot. So far, the race apparently has always come lower for them. Yes, Colbert is basically "acting" on his show, so voters have preferred -- and can still favor -- Stewart's real-existence method of news analysis over spoofy theatrics. PHOTOS: Emmy Nomination Snubs, Shockers and Surprises Late Evening with Jimmy Fallon NBC Why It Might Win: On Emmy nominations morning, still giddy about the phone from New You are able to, Jimmy Fallon stated something interesting: "We're the only real late-evening show that's a classic comedy, music and variety series, apart from SNL." He's right: One of the weeknight nominees within this category, Fallon consistently produces probably the most original music content, comedy sketches (many shot) and variety-esque shows of silliness (beer pong with The month of january Johnson!). The Lorne Michaels protege inherited a difficult-to-beat legacy from Conan O'Brien and it has handled the recognition with utmost aplomb. His killer Emmy hosting gig this past year didn't hurt, either. Why It Might Lose: Fallon could are afflicted by the brand new-kid-on-the-block shutout that affected O'Brien, whose NBC series Late Evening never won. PHOTOS: David Strick 2011 Emmy Nominees Saturday Evening Live NBC Why It Might Win: Having a slew of remarkable hosts last season, including guest-star nominees Tina Fey, Zach Galifianakis and front-runner Justin Timberlake, the 36-year-old staple has handled to retain its youthful appeal (digital shorts starring Michael Bolton!) while keeping that old-school spirit of their creator, Michaels. Mind author Seth Meyers, also nominated, is the best merry prankster to supervise SNL's antics in modern times, and it is awesome cast -- Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudeikis, et al. -- makes a dying genre relevant again. Why It Might Lose: The range, music and comedy race has morphed into something unfriendly to SNL (it last won in 1993) since it's format no more includes a peer. Conan The best spinner's Why It Might Win: O'Brien hasn't lost the underdog quirk that made his NBC series this type of hit among youthful audiences through the the nineteen nineties. His well-promoted Fight Using the Guy at the begining of 2010 only bolstered his appeal, and despite the fact that his The best spinner's version pulls in modest amounts (about a million audiences), O'Brien is really a survivor, and Emmy loves a meaty backstory. And hey, standing on fundamental cable hasn't hurt The Daily Show one bit. Why It Might Lose: Voters might feel a jerk for Conan is premature this season which his inclusion even without the other more powerful challengers -- no Letterman, Kimmel or Handler? -- feels a little gratuitous. Real-time with Bill Maher Cinemax Why It Might Win: Nobody brings about with less self-awareness than perennial nominee (and loser) Bill Maher. The stand-up comedian and filmmaker (Religulous) clearly comes with an impressive achieve in the market, putting together killer lineups of questionable speaking heads every week, such as the bipartisan, questionable likes of Richard Clarke, Ann Coulter, Eliot Spitzer and Serta Savage. Love him or detest him, Maher may be the only soul on television brave enough to shirk any pressure to become pleasant. Why It Might Lose: His acerbic routine, though his phone card, is really a turn-on some. And airing only once per week, on Fridays, doesn't position him to contend with Stewart and Colbert, who reach skewer four days per week. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Comedy Central Why It Might Win: Stewart is easily the most reliable guy in news as well as an open advocate for U.S. soldiers and 9/11 sufferers. He's also overseen the winningest variety show in Emmy history. As well as when Daily Show side bits don't kill, Stewart is definitely good. Oh, and that he just came back from the surprise visit to go to the troops in Afghanistan. Why It Might Lose: The show's eight-year Emmy monopoly. With many different new names elsewhere about the ballot, it's obvious that voters are craving new bloodstream. Titanic In three dimensional At Giant Screen
Sneak look of Cameron's classic & moreIt's at last. After several weeks of labor and whole minutes of preparation, Empire Presents...Giant Screen began today in the O2 working in london. Our very own Chris Hewitt was there to provide the big event in fashion, or at best their own inimitable style, and the initial studio to provide footage was twentieth century Fox. Fox' Chris Eco-friendly was there to provide the panel. He began using the just-launched Rise From The Planet From The Apes, in which we had a featurette about the groundbreaking apes results of the film along with a quick consider the barnstorming last act. It was the turn of Over Time, the Justin Timberlake / Amanda Seyfried sci-fi thriller. Which was exactly the same lengthy-form trailer we have seen before, however it looked great about the giant screen. It was the turn of Russian-set sci-fi thriller The Pitch-dark Hour (in three dimensional) and a little of the change of pace using the much-recognized indie Martha Marcy May Marlene. We'd an intro from a few of the world's best company directors - including James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Tim Burton, Matthew Vaughn, Timur Bekmambetov, Cameron Crowe and George Lucas - speaking regarding their passion for cinema and (not surprisingly because of the hosts) dealing with Fox, that was nonetheless rather awesome. Well, they are all very wise and entertaining males. We carried out with phone remastered three dimensional version of Titanic, which is launched the coming year for that 100th anniversary from the disaster, having a specifically-recorded intro from producer Jon Landau. The moments we had spanned the majority of the movie, from Rose's arrival in the ship, Jack's appearance in the lent tuxedo, the dancing below decks, the "I am flying!" scene, the ship's first sight from the iceberg, the "Nearer My God To Thee" montage (yup, will still be a tear-jerker in stereoscope) and also the memorable sight from the ship up-ending and sinking for the waves. As you may expect with Cameron themself managing the conversion, it had been pretty perfect within the footage we had, adding just a little dimension to occasions (particularly the view of the engine room pistons slowing down and curing speed) but without showing an excessive amount of a distraction. Roll on April 2012, frankly.

TCA: Kevin Williamson Says 'Secret Circle' And 'Vampire Diaries' Won't Cross Over
Diane Haithmanis contributing to Deadline's coverage of TCA. According to executive producer Kevin Williamson, there wont be any guest crossover, or story crossover, between the CWs The Vampire Diaries and the network's newseries The Secret Circle, making its debut Sept. 15. Even though both series are based on supernatural book series by the same teen-appeal author, L.J. Smith, Williamson told a TCA audience today that an effort is being made to keep the shows separate. The witch mythology of Secret Circle and the vampire-werewolf-occasional witch mythology of Vampire Diaries, he said, just dont mix. I dont think youll see that crossover, he said. That would kind of limit us. We want to create our own story. And its not just about the mythology. Secret Circle is shot in and around Vancouver, B.C. and Williamson was asked whether it might not have been easier, financially and physically, to shoot the new show on location in or near Atlanta, where Vampire Diaries is shot, Williamson said: I dont want the show to look like Vampire Diaries. (He acknowledged after the session that Vancouver priced out over some other locations. It made sense financially, visually. Williamson -- co-executive producing Secret Circles with Andrew Miller (Imaginary Bitches), Leslie Morgenstein (The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl) and Gina Girolamo -- said following the panel that taking on a new show will not affect his involvement in Vampire Diaries as co-showrunner with longtime collaborator Julie Plec. We call each other every night and cry for two hours and figure out what were going to do. Were joined at the hip. He said he has tried to talk Plec into assuming creative duties for the new show but so far she has resisted. Williamson -- who appeared on the panel with co-execs Girolamo and Miller, as well as star Britt Robertson and other cast members -- also said that the world of magic lends itself to a slightly lighter tone than the vampire scene. Its an honest reaction to the world around them, they are suddenly making this magic. There is a certain snark to that, he said. But not too light, a la Sabrina the Teenage Witch: Its very dark, but not that hard-edge ripping hearts out and slicing people open like Vampire Diaries," he said. Were just challenged as to what can witches do? Yes, there will be humor and scary witchy-woo. As have other CW panelists today, Williamson challenged the notion that either show is intended to be just for that network's coveted 18-34 demographic, which is to say that not everything happens in high school corridors. The vampires are 164 years old, he points out. And what I love (about The Secret Circle) is that it is multigenerational, its not just a teen show. Its a very adult show, and it'sgoing to get very adult, very fast. Were going more in that direction.

Concept art now online for Fire And Ice
The concept art Robert Rodriguez displayed for Fire And Ice at Comic-Disadvantage has made an appearance online.  The director has teamed using the estate of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta to make a live-action undertake Fire And Ice, that was already the topic of a 1983 animated film.  Rodriguez stated he wants the film "to seem like you simply walked into among his works of art, where you're able to see his world, and just how he saw people, anatomy, and composition and colour.&rdquo  &ldquoIt will seem like it's real, although not real. It will be his reality. He saw things in a different way. He colored from his imagination. Children's Musicals Find a Happy Home in New York
NEW YORK (AP) — The crowd attending a hit musical recently on the Upper East Side weren't shy about loudly offering their thoughts. "What are they doing?" asked one. "I want to dance," said another. And, most worrisome for producers, one patron was heard offering this critique: "I want to go home." She was, it turned out, in the minority. She was also about 4. The rest of the theatergoers — mostly little girls in pink tutus and rabbit ears — were happily bouncing about and clapping along to "Angelina Ballerina: The Musical," one of several kid-orientated musicals based on popular children's books that have found success in New York City. There's also "Pinkalicious: The Musical" and "The Berenstain Bears Live! In Family Matters, the Musical," which share the same space on the Upper West Side. In November, "Freckleface Strawberry: The Musical" — based on the book by actress Julianne Moore — returns after a successful off-Broadway run this spring. "We have seen a tremendous increase — especially in the last eight or nine years — in works for young people around town," says Cora Cahan, president of The New 42nd Street, a nonprofit organization that is responsible for reviving 42nd Street and operates the New Victory Theater, the city's first and only full-time performing arts theater for kids and their families. New musicals based on kids' books are a hot trend elsewhere, including "Harold and the Purple Crayon" at Seattle Children's Theatre, and the upcoming adaptation of "Pippi Longstocking" planned by the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. Transforming popular children's' books into musicals — as opposed to making them up from scratch — has some advantages, namely in immediate brand recognition, tried and tested stories, and parents who grew up on the books and want to pass that love down to their kids. That's how Matt Murphy, a producer of the Tony Award-winning "Memphis" and the off-Broadway hit "Altar Boyz," ended up bringing the Berenstain Bears to Manhattan. A fan of the book series, Murphy helped produce an early version that toured the country before he led an effort to beef up the script, set and songs for New York. "We're bringing the production quality to this show that I would bring to any of my Broadway shows," says Murphy, a new father of daughter Hazel. "And because our show is not going to cost parents an arm and a leg the way a Broadway show would, it seems to be a nice fit for an affordable family outing." Stephen Sunderlin, the artistic director and founding member of the nonprofit Vital Theatre Company, which is producing the Pinkalicious and Angelina musicals, says the shows' lengths are kid-friendly — usually an hour — and usually are the first piece of theater that children see. "There's something about being in a room with people and watching your child experience live theater," he says. "I can't tell you how many parents say they love our shows but they love watching their kids watch the shows more." Rose Caiola, the producer and co-book writer of "Freckleface Strawberry: The Musical," says the theatrical shows get kids excited about seeing their favorite characters and make parents happy since they reinforce the books' feel-good messages, in her case the anti-bullying moral of Freckleface Strawberry. "Children can already connect with stories that they know and love. So they're very excited and interested to see their characters come to life on stage," she says. "So much of what kids see on television, unfortunately, is a little bit mind-numbing." More musicals and book adaptations are on the way to the city thanks to New Victory, whose upcoming season includes a theatrical adaptation of Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," the U.S. premier of a musical based on the children's book "The Terrible Plop" and the New York premiere of "Lucky Duck," a musical with a score by Henry Krieger, who wrote the songs for "Dreamgirls." The New Victory was founded in 1995 and its leaders see the recent surge in children's' theater productions in the city as the result of their efforts to attract interesting works for kids from across the globe. "We think maybe and possibly we have helped encourage others to do works for young people where others dared to venture before the New Victory," says Cahan. "We're finding there's a tremendous appetite." Along with the New Victory, changes the city itself has undergone have made children's' programming more attractive — crime rates have plummeted and neighborhoods such as Times Square and the Lower East Side, once seedy parts of town, have been cleaned up and transformed into booming commercial zones. "Maybe I'm naive, but it seems to me like there's an effort to make the city more and more family-friendly," says Murphy, who is producing the Berenstain Bears musical at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, near Central Park and Columbus Circle. "Where young families used to feel like, 'OK, we have kids. It's time to move out into the suburbs,' now there are more and more families trying to make a go of it in the city proper. And I think in part due to that, you're seeing a real desire for family entertainment." Mary Rose Lloyd, the director of programming at the New Victory, also sees artists turn their attention to children's theater for personal reasons. "Artists are having children of their own and they're looking around and saying, 'I don't want to take my child to that. I need more Barney on Ice like I need a hole in my head.'" Creators of children's' programming all agree on the long-term value of introducing live theater to young people: Today's squirmy toddlers watching adults dressed as mice sing will one day be eager to catch a Broadway show — or even write one. "When we hear statistics where there's now two generations of kids going through some public school systems without any contact with the arts, it's unfortunate," says Sunderlin, whose theatre company has a vibrant education wing. "So we're trying to do our part, kind of making sure folks stay engaged in some kind of art form." The producers also stress that a key to the success of children's theater is to never forget one important demographic: the parents. Clunky songs, halfhearted performances, poor production values or endless repetition are as popular with adults as being smacked over the head with a squeaky hammer. "The parents have to enjoy this, too," says Sunderlin. Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
